The Makurdi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has written a tribute in honour of Justice Aloysius Katsina – Alu, and also set aside seven (7) days to mourn his demise. This was contained in a statement by the Chairman of the branch and privately made available to TheNigerialawseven-day. The seven-day mourning which started on Wednesday, 18th July 2018 is expected to end on Wednesday, the 25th day of July 2018. Read the tribute below: “We woke up on Wednesday 18th July 2018 to be greeted with the rude shock of the demise of Justice Aloysius Iorgyer Katsina – Alu. Today being the 3rd day of our official mourning, we have mustered the minimum fortitude to voice out our lamentations over the irreparable loss that has been occasioned. “He was born on the 28th day of August 1941. Unconsciously preparing him for the challenging life ahead, he enrolled at the Nigerian Military College, Kaduna in 1962 and later proceeded to Mons Military Training College Aldershot, England, and returned to Nigeria in 1963 only to be enrolled at the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He proceeded again to England at the Inns of Court School of Law, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Called to the English Bar in 1967 and the Nigerian Bar in 1968, Justice Katsina – Alu’s 44 years of active legal practice impacted tremendously on the Benue legal space. From being an astute Counsel, ascended and served meritoriously as the Leader of the Benue Bar – AG, and later a judge of the Benue State Judiciary. Through these years, he distinguished himself as a worthy patriot of Benue extraction before his elevation to the National Legal sphere from the Court of Appeal through the Supreme Court where he served for 13 years as a Justice of the apex court, the climax being his appointment as 10th Chief Justice of Nigeria. With specific reference to the Benue Bar, his influence blessed us with not less than three Senior Advocates of Nigeria. The Court of Appeal and the National Industrial Court were brought to our door steps thereby enhancing legal in our jurisdiction. We cannot voice half of our cogitations. We observe a pause at this juncture while we await other contributions. A true soldier of the law has gone home!”]]>
