The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, convened in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, and presided over by Justice Maryam Sabo, has absolved Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, the representative of Adamawa Central, from forgery accusations leveled against him by Senator Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako of the APC.

The tribunal further ordered Senator Nyako to pay a cost of N750,000 to Senator Abbas of the PDP, whose victory as the Senator representing Adamawa South senatorial district was upheld by the tribunal.

This verdict came in response to a petition filed by APC candidate Senator Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako, who sought to invalidate Abbas’ victory and have himself declared the rightful winner. Nyako alleged falsification of documents submitted to INEC by Senator Abbas.

In her judgment delivered on Monday, Justice Sabo, the tribunal’s chairperson, completely dismissed the petition, citing its lack of merit. She affirmed Senator Abbas’ victory as the representative of Adamawa Central senatorial district in the National Assembly.

Justice Sabo pointed out that the petitioner failed to substantiate his claims beyond a reasonable doubt. She emphasized that the petitioner did not present credible evidence to warrant the annulment of the election.

The burden of proof rested on the petitioner, but the documents provided fell short of expectations and did not establish any criminal intent on Senator Abbas’ part.
