The prosecution of two suspects accused of the gruesome murder of a retired judge in Delta State, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, has commenced at the State High Court sitting in Asaba.

Leading the prosecution team is the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, alongside the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Omamuzo Erebe, SAN, and other state counsel.

The defendants — Godwin Mngumi, a 25-year-old security guard, and Nnaji Abalum — were represented by their counsel, Ernest Edomwonyi, Director of Public Defender, and E. I. Opiah.

Justice Okogwu was reportedly attacked and killed on November 27, 2025, at her residence in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Upon arraignment on a four-count charge bordering on armed robbery, conspiracy and murder on Tuesday, both defendants pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution, however, assured the court of its readiness to diligently pursue the case, emphasising that the state government remains committed to ensuring that justice is served.

The team further stressed that the state places a high priority on the protection of lives and property and would not tolerate acts of violent crime.

The presiding judge adjourned the matter to April 14, 2026, for the prosecution to open its case and present witnesses.
