In a fiery interview on Arise TV’s News Night, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido accused President Bola Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election under General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime. Lamido claimed Tinubu is now attempting to “deconstruct and rewrite history” to portray himself as a champion of Nigerian democracy.

Lamido, a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alleged that Tinubu, then a senator and secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was among those who backed Babangida’s decision to annul the election widely believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola. He cited historical events, including Tinubu’s mother, Haja Haja Moaji, organizing Lagos women to pledge support for Babangida in Abuja. Lamido stated, “Tinubu became relevant and noticeable only after Abacha took over government… he was part of those supporting Babangida’s annulment of June 12.” He further claimed that Tinubu only became a June 12 activist after General Sani Abacha’s regime began, aligning with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) to oppose Abacha, not to fight for democracy itself.

The former governor expressed amusement at Tinubu’s recent Democracy Day speech, calling it a dramatization of his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle. “We were all there, participants in that sphere of political activity… he’s trying to rewrite history to fit his political interest,” Lamido said, urging Nigerians to verify his claims with other political figures like Atiku Abubakar and Ibrahim Gana.

Lamido also declared his readiness to join any political arrangement, regardless of its “nomenclature,” to remove the current administration, which he described as incompetent and divisive. “I am part of any arrangement to remove this government of incompetence, insecurity, that is dividing Nigeria firmly between North and South, out of power,” he stated. He criticized the government for prioritizing the interests of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over Nigerians, pointing to Tinubu holding party functions in the Presidential Villa as evidence of the administration’s misuse of state institutions.

Lamido dismissed concerns about the timing of the newly proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), led by Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, which has applied for registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He argued that any coalition must focus on national unity, security, and prosperity, unlike the 2014 alliance that produced Muhammadu Buhari, which he described as driven by “anger, revenge, and hatred.” He accused Tinubu of governing Nigeria like a “tiny street called Lagos,” personalizing power and using state institutions to coerce opposition.

Commenting on recent political defections, such as Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno’s move to the APC, Lamido decried the lack of character and principles in modern Nigerian politics. He recounted his own experience in 1983, when he resigned from the House of Representatives after leaving the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) to join the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), emphasizing that politicians should relinquish positions gained through a party before defecting. “If you remove the office from them, they’ll become nobody,” he said, criticizing leaders who use public office for personal gain.

Lamido also addressed calls for younger leadership, agreeing that the failures of elder statesmen like Buhari and Tinubu have fueled youth disillusionment. “The youth are right… they believed the lies of Buhari and Tinubu, and now they’ve been disappointed,” he said, acknowledging the need for new leaders with a service mentality.
