The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended former Speaker Aondona Dajoh for three months over an alleged attempt to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The suspension followed a motion moved on Tuesday by the lawmaker representing Kyan State Constituency, Terna Shimawua, and seconded by James Umoru from Apa State Constituency. Interestingly, Shimawua, who moved the motion, was among those suspended last Friday by Dajoh before his resignation as Speaker.
The current Speaker, Alfred Berger, who presided over the motion, reduced Dajoh’s suspension from six to three months without the usual voting procedure on such matters.
In a new development on Tuesday, the Assembly reversed a previous decision and confirmed the nomination of Timothy Yangien Ornguga as commissioner. Ornguga, a law lecturer at Benue State University, had been rejected last week by the former Speaker, Dajoh.
During Tuesday’s session, the new Speaker, Berger, read a letter from Governor Alia and screened five additional nominees, including the law professor. Berger noted that the governor believed the two nominees — Ornguga and James Dwem — had not been convicted of any crime, despite petitions submitted against their nominations, hence the appeal to confirm them.
Notably, lawmakers who had previously opposed the confirmation remained silent when the speaker approved the two nominees without the usual voice votes.
The House also lifted suspensions on three political office holders previously suspended by the governor. They are Grace Adagba, Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board; Maxwell Ogiri, Otukpo Local Government Chairman; and Michael Uper, Secretary of the State Lottery Board.
