The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday confirmed that President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the ongoing political crisis between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, expressing optimism that this would be the final time the President would need to step in.

Wike made the disclosure while speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting several ongoing infrastructure projects in the territory.

According to Wike, this is the second time President Tinubu has intervened in the crisis between the governor and the state assembly.

“All I can tell you is that Mr President has been very kind to the people of the state. If there seems to be a problem between the legislature and the governor, as a father, he really has to intervene,” Wike said.

“I remember this is the second time Mr President has intervened. I believe, by the grace of God, this will be the last time. I have told the Assembly to obey Mr President, which I know they will not hesitate to do. I also believe that this is the final time we must be hearing this kind of discourse.”

The minister emphasised the authority of the President’s counsel, noting that President Tinubu acted in his capacity as a father figure and peacemaker.

“The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress,” Wike stated.

Reflecting on the specifics of the truce and the expectations for both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Fubara, the minister was clear about the path forward.

“The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable,” he said.

“And I know that the governor would carry out his own part to make sure that this is the final time that Rivers people will hear this kind of discord.”

Wike maintained that the commitment to stability is now the priority.

“The most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding,” the minister stated.

Reports had indicated that President Tinubu, Wike, and Governor Fubara met on Sunday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

It was reported that after the meeting, Fubara followed Wike to his residence to make amends in a bid to resolve the crisis.

The state assembly, which is seen as loyal to Wike, had recently begun impeachment moves against the governor. As part of measures to find a political solution to the matter, President Tinubu had on Monday summoned Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa to mediate in the feud.
