Nigerian comedian and actor Samuel Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has opened up about the life-threatening gunshot injury that kept him away from the public for months, recounting how a stray bullet struck him, left him unable to move one of his legs and forced him to undergo surgeries in Nigeria and Dubai.

The 33-year-old comedian said the incident occurred on March 9, 2026, after he had completed a brand activation and was leaving the venue when he suddenly heard a loud bang while caught in traffic.

Broda Shaggi, who recounted the experience in a video shared on his YouTube channel on Wednesday, described the day as one he wished had never happened.

“9th of March, 2026. It was a crazy day. A day in my life I wish never happened. Everything happened so fast that I barely could even understand what was happening around me. It was just a normal day, like a day I would go out for any brand activation until the devil decided to show up,” he said.

According to him, he and members of his team had finished the activation and were already on the expressway when traffic built up because of a crowd.

“All of a sudden, I heard a loud bang. Everywhere was silent. But I could still see people moving outside, people talking, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. It was just total silence in the car,” he recalled.

Broda Shaggi said he subsequently touched his hip and discovered that he was bleeding, at which point he realised that he had been hit by what he described as a stray bullet.

“Then, I touched my hip and saw blood. That was when it dawned on me that I had been hit by a stray bullet. Emotions were high, I’m not going to lie. Things were running through my mind. Would this be my last day? You know, it was just a crazy day. A crazy day,” he said.

The comedian said he later lost consciousness and could not remember how he was transported to the hospital.

He recalled that his overwhelming concern at the time was staying alive and hearing medical personnel assure him that he would survive.

“All that was in my mind was just to survive, to live through that moment because I didn’t want to die. I said, I didn’t want to die,” he said.

According to him, medical personnel at the first hospital cut off his clothes to locate the gunshot wound and administered initial treatment before informing him that he needed to be transferred because the facility lacked the equipment required to properly manage his condition.

“Then, it got to that point where they said they had to take me to another hospital because they didn’t have enough equipment to handle me at that hospital. A lot was happening at once. I was sweating, I was holding my leg, I was seeing blood, and all I wanted to hear was a doctor telling me, ‘Samuel, you’ll be fine, you’ll be all right, you won’t die,’” he said.

He said he was eventually taken to another hospital, where medical workers immediately moved him into the emergency room and began treating the wound.

“They were swift. They were very helpful. They immediately put me in the emergency room. They started treating the wound, and at that particular time, my mind started settling, and I knew that, okay, I would make it through this moment,” he said.

However, his relief was short-lived when he realised that he could not move his injured leg.

Broda Shaggi said the development frightened him because of the importance of movement and dancing to his career as a performer.

“Minutes later, everything was calm. I couldn’t move my leg. Then I started worrying again, and it dawned on me that everything that happened could change my whole life. As a performer, as an artiste, I grew up dancing with my daddy,” he said.

The comedian subsequently underwent surgery in Nigeria but said he woke up in severe pain and remained unable to properly move the affected leg.

He recalled becoming emotional during his recovery and questioning why he had to go through such an experience.

However, he said he eventually changed his perspective and began thanking God for keeping him alive, concluding that the incident might have forced him to take a rest after years of working continuously.

“Since 2018 till date, I never rest. It’s always back-to-back. If I’m not writing, I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something. So I consoled myself with that. Maybe it was time to rest,” he said.

Broda Shaggi said the inability to act, dance or sing during his hospitalisation affected him emotionally because those activities had become central to his life.

“When I’m not doing the things I love doing most, I feel very useless. While I was in the hospital, I couldn’t act. I could not dance, nor sing, or do whatever I loved. So I went back to writing content again,” he said.

He disclosed that he began developing a new series for his YouTube channel while recovering, motivated by the knowledge that his fans had missed seeing his regular content.

The actor also admitted that watching videos of colleagues performing sometimes left him emotional because he was uncertain whether he would regain enough mobility to return to the career he loved.

“There were moments when I would see videos of my colleagues, laugh, and sometimes start to cry, because I wasn’t sure I would still be able to do all the things they were doing again. I couldn’t imagine myself not having dropped like six skits in a month,” he said.

Broda Shaggi further revealed that he travelled to Dubai for additional medical treatment after the surgery in Nigeria failed to restore movement to his injured leg.

He said he was examined by a doctor identified as Anil, who told him that despite concerns earlier raised about certain medical markers, surgery could still proceed.

“I was examined by Doctor Anil. I was waiting to hear whatever he was going to say, because the doctor in Nigeria already told me that the markers were not regulated yet; that’s why I couldn’t do the surgery. So he checked, examined me, and said the markers truly aren’t regulated, but based on what he’s saying, he can go ahead with the surgery,” he recalled.

According to the comedian, the doctor’s assurance gave him renewed hope, particularly after being told that he could be able to stand on both feet the day after the procedure.

“Him saying that gave me, like, so much hope. I felt really happy, and he said that after the surgery, the next day, I’ll be able to stand on my two feet,” he said.

Broda Shaggi said he placed the outcome of the surgery in God’s hands because he had always viewed surgical procedures as potentially life-threatening.

“I prayed again. I’ve always seen surgeries to be a life-or-death matter, you know, so I made sure to put everything in God’s hands,” he said.

Reflecting on the shooting, he said he remained grateful that the bullet hit his hip and that the incident did not end more tragically.

“Throughout this period, until now, one thing I keep saying is that I’m grateful because it could have been worse. It was a stray bullet, and it came this way to my hip,” he said.

Broda Shaggi said there was a period when he could not move without two crutches or place his injured leg on the ground.

Although his condition has improved and he can now stand and walk without crutches for limited periods, he said he still uses them for support as his recovery continues.

The comedian described his survival as a “second chance” and said he would prefer his fans to celebrate his return rather than feel sorry for him.

He also announced that he was preparing to resume his creative work with several projects he had been unable to execute during the six to seven months he spent dealing with the injury and recovery.

“Second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggi back on your screen, because I’m coming up with exciting projects right now. Trust me. The things I’ve always wanted to do, the things I plan to do this year, that I’ve not been able to do for the past six, seven months,” he said.

“When you open Instagram, make sure you don’t block me, because I’m coming in with a lot. Get ready.”

Broda Shaggi’s account marks his first detailed public explanation of the injury and prolonged absence from social media, with the comedian saying the experience has given him a renewed appreciation for life as he gradually returns to performing and content creation.
