Nigeria’s index case of the imported Ebola virus disease has been evacuated to Switzerland for further medical care, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, has said.

Pate disclosed that the patient departed Abuja earlier on Monday with his approval, accompanied by her spouse, who has remained asymptomatic.

According to the Minister, the patient’s clinical condition had improved substantially before the evacuation.

He said she was stable, conscious and communicating, while her laboratory test results were moving closer to baseline levels.

“The index patient was clinically much improved, stable, conscious, communicating, and her clinical laboratory test results closing towards baseline. This does not mean she is not still infectious, hence the strict protocols in place,” Pate said.

The Minister stressed that the patient’s improvement did not mean she was no longer capable of transmitting the virus, explaining that strict public health protocols remained in force throughout the evacuation process.

Pate commended the clinical personnel who managed the patient and the public health officials who coordinated the evacuation in accordance with established health protocols.

He said the Federal Government would provide further updates after the patient and her spouse arrived safely in Switzerland.

The evacuation comes as health authorities continue measures aimed at containing the imported Ebola case and preventing further transmission.

Pate assured Nigerians that public health interventions, including surveillance and monitoring of persons who may have been exposed, would continue despite the patient’s departure.

“All public health measures are continuing to ensure successful containment of the imported virus. I urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and rely on information from credible sources,” he said.
