Texas Senator Ted Cruz and U.S. Congressman Riley Moore have commended President Donald Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” describing the move as a decisive step toward addressing alleged persecution of Christians in the country.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, claimed that Christianity faces an “existential threat” in Nigeria, blaming radical Islamist groups for widespread killings of Christians. “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern,’” he wrote. Trump added that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening” and pledged that Washington would “stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world.”
Cruz applauded Trump’s decision in a statement on his website, noting that he had long advocated for stronger measures against religious persecution in Nigeria. “I am deeply gratified to President Trump for making this determination. I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria, and this year introduced legislation that will lock in the designation made today,” he said. The senator added that the redesignation is a vital step toward holding Nigerian officials accountable for policies that enable attacks on Christians and said his proposed legislation would go further by imposing sanctions on individuals enforcing blasphemy and sharia laws.
Moore similarly praised Trump’s action via his X handle, describing it as a demonstration of strong leadership and commitment to protecting persecuted Christians. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Trump and congressional leaders to defend Christians he said are “being slaughtered by radical Islamists in Nigeria.” Moore had previously urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take diplomatic action against what he described as systematic persecution, calling Nigeria the deadliest place in the world to be a Christian and advocating for the suspension of arms sales until the Nigerian government shows a “tangible commitment” to ending the violence.
Citing figures from Open Doors and other reports, Moore alleged that over 7,000 Christians were killed in 2025 alone and that at least 19,100 churches have been attacked or destroyed since 2009. He also claimed that corrupt cells within the Nigerian government may be complicit in some attacks and highlighted the activities of 22 Islamic terror groups in the country with links to ISIS and other networks.
Responding to the allegations, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the claims as “misleading and unreflective” of Nigeria’s complex security realities. Speaking on CNN, Idris stated that while Christians are indeed attacked, criminals target both Christians and Muslims, particularly in northern Nigeria. He warned that promoting narratives of religious persecution could inadvertently embolden criminal groups and fuel inter-religious tension.
The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding religious freedom, human rights, the rule of law, and democracy, noting that Nigerians of all faiths have long lived, worked, and worshipped together peacefully.
