The newly appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Engr. Abdullahi Ramat, has assumed office in Abuja with a firm pledge to ensure electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and generation companies (GenCos) comply with market rules.

Speaking at his inauguration on Friday, Ramat declared that under his leadership, “it will not be business as usual” for operators in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“We know the problems Nigerians are facing, and this time, the distribution and generation companies must do the right thing. This is my message to them,” he said.

Ramat, who takes over from Engr. Sanusi Garba, said he would first study the handover notes to understand ongoing operations before rolling out changes. He stressed that reforms in the power sector would require collective effort from all stakeholders.

“We cannot change things overnight, but if we join hands together, we can improve efficiency and boost electricity supply,” he added.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Thursday announced Ramat’s nomination as NERC Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, alongside Mr. Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner of Consumer Affairs and Dr. Fouad Animashun as Commissioner of Finance and Management Services. While the appointments await Senate confirmation, Tinubu directed Ramat to serve in an acting capacity.

At Friday’s handover ceremony, Ramat — escorted by a military officer, friends, and associates — was received by NERC Vice Chairman, Musiliu Osen. He thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing the challenges in the power sector as surmountable with teamwork and professionalism.

Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator with a PhD in Strategic Management. He is a former Executive Chairman of Ungogo Local Government in Kano State.

Recall that his predecessor, Sanusi Garba, is due to complete his tenure in December.
