Mr. Akpata is a vision-driven and future-focused gentleman, with a cliche that he envisions “Making The Bar Works For All” because he is “Olu 4 all”.
His illuminating mission for the Association is one that is anchored on “REPOSITIONING” with four ways to transformational leadership agendas.
Olu is committed to transforming the Nigerian Bar Association to such an extent that it shall stand on the same pedestal with the other Bars across the world. This, we believe he would achieve as encapsulated in his 43-page policy document.
“The challenge of our generation is that of fixing a broken society that has in many instances been disappointed by its leadership. It is that generational challenge, amongst other things, that my quest to lead the NBA for the next two years seeks to address. Together, we can build a progressive and prosperous NBA that will provide the illumination that our profession and country so desperately need at this time. I come to you with the philosophy, hope, will and determination to make things better”, Olu had said.
Mr. Olumide Akpata graduated from University of Benin at the age of 20 where he bagged his Bachelor of Laws, and thereafter proceeded to Nigerian Law School from 1992 to 1993 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993.
He had practiced in the law firm of Dr Mudiaga Odje & Co. in Warri, Delta state for two years, having been called to the Bar in 1993, he relocated to Lagos. He moved to Lagos in 1996 and teamed up with his cousin, Oghogho Akpata, who had just set up the law firm – Templars in 1995 after honing his own skills in the firm of F.O Akinrele & Co.
Olumide Akpata is a Partner in the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group of the Firm and he is currently the Head of that Group.
He is admitted to practice in Nigeria and has over two decades of experience in advising clients on various aspects of Nigerian Corporate and Commercial Law.
He has been recognised by IFLR 1000 as a leading Mergers & Acquisition lawyer in Nigeria and by Chambers and Partners “as having long experience in representing foreign clients” in his area of practice.
Prior to his emergence as the NBA President, he served as the Officer, Law Firm Management Committee of the NBA Section on Legal Practice from 2010 to 2014.
In addition, from 2014 to 2016, he had served as the NBA Representative at the International Bar Association where he served in different capacities: Vice chairman, IBA Africa Regional Forum; Officer, IBA Anti-Corruption Committee; Member, IBA Presidential Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession; Member, IBA Credentials Committee.
In addition, he has been a member of the NBA Section on Business Law Council from 2012 till date and had been in the section since 2004. He served as the Secretary from 2012 to 2014. And later, he became the Vice Chairman from 2014 to 2016 and later became the Chairman from 2016 to 2018.
