The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has constituted a three-member Caretaker Committee to administer the affairs of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch following the expiration of the tenure of the branch’s Executive Committee.

The decision followed the failure of the branch to conduct elections within the constitutionally prescribed period, thereby creating the need for an interim administrative structure to manage the branch and organise elections in line with the NBA Constitution and the NBA Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches.

In a notice dated June 26, 2026, Osigwe named Idris Abayomi Shehu as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, while Friday Azubuike will serve as Secretary. Dr. Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire was appointed as member.

The NBA President said the Caretaker Committee shall administer and manage the affairs of the Port Harcourt Branch pending the conduct of elections into the offices of the branch.

He further directed that the committee shall immediately act as the Electoral Committee of the branch and take all necessary steps to organise and conduct free, fair, transparent and credible elections in accordance with the Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association and the NBA Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches.

Osigwe also directed the committee to work in close collaboration with the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, who is expected to provide oversight and guidance to ensure the successful execution of the committee’s mandate.

According to the notice, the Caretaker Committee is to assume office and commence the discharge of its responsibilities with effect from 00:00 hours, midnight, on June 26, 2026.

The notice was signed by Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
