Sheriff and Makarfi, both former governors and senators, have been laying claims to the position. While Sheriff is claiming a mandate to complete the tenure of former chairman, erstwhile Bauchi State Governor Adamu Muazu, Makarfi is holding on to the acting chairman mandate given him by the party National Executive Committee (NEC) at its botched convention in Port-Harcourt.
