Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ikeazor Akaraiwa, has suggested that each state should establish a minimum wage that aligns with its local cost of living.

He also urged the labour union to negotiate nationwide, noting that not all states can afford a 70,000 Naira minimum wage.

Ikeazor made these remarks during an interview with Channels TV on Friday, October 18.

Akaraiwa argued that the economic situation and living costs vary significantly across the country, making a uniform national minimum wage impractical. “The cost of living in Lagos is different in Enugu and so they should have a state minimum wage which labour can negotiate across the nation,” he stated.

The Senior Advocate disagreed with the labour union’s insistence on a nationwide minimum wage applicable to all states. “With the greatest respect to Labour, they are wrong,” Ikeazor asserted.

He questioned the feasibility of a 70,000 Naira monthly minimum wage, pointing out that some states cannot afford it. Ikeazor also criticized labour’s inaction when states fail to observe the minimum wage, asking rhetorically, “What does labour do? Nothing.”

Ikeazor urged the labour union to negotiate minimum wages at the state level, taking into account the economic realities and living costs in each state. He suggested that this approach would be more effective than setting a uniform national standard that some states may struggle to meet.

The Senior Advocate also emphasized the need for a proper federal system in Nigeria. “For a proper federation, some states will have to merge. Many northern states can survive if the solid minerals they have been blessed with are properly exploited and not by individuals,” Ikeazor stated.

He further underscored the importance of resolving federalism issues to promote peace in the country. “We need to always remember that we are a federal republic, not a military state. If we resolve the issue of federalism in this country, there will be more peace,” Ikeazor remarked.
