The management of Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, Lagos, has expressed deep sympathy to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie and her family over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, while dismissing reports linking the incident to medical negligence.

In a statement signed by its management, the hospital described the loss as “profound and unimaginable,” noting that the death of a child is beyond words. Euracare said it found it necessary to clarify the record, stressing that some reports currently in circulation contain inaccuracies.

The hospital explained that Nkanu, who was critically ill, was referred to its facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment for a period at two paediatric centres. According to the statement, upon his arrival, Euracare’s medical team immediately commenced care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including the administration of sedation where clinically indicated.

Euracare stated that it worked collaboratively with external medical teams recommended by the family and ensured that all necessary clinical support was provided throughout the course of care. Despite these efforts, the hospital said the child passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at the facility.

“We have commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices. We remain committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes,” the hospital said.

The management added that it recognised the depth of the family’s grief and would continue to support them in any way possible, while emphasising compassion, patient safety and respect for due process and the family’s privacy.

The statement follows public allegations by Adichie, who accused the hospital’s staff of medical negligence. She had narrated that her son was brought to Euracare for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line, ahead of a scheduled medical evacuation to the United States. According to her, he was sedated for the procedures but allegedly not properly monitored afterwards, leading to seizures, cardiac arrest and his eventual death.

Adichie described the incident as criminal negligence and raised concerns about the conduct of the anaesthesiologist involved, alleging prior similar incidents.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has said it is monitoring the allegations surrounding the child’s death. Its National President, Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, said investigations would typically involve reviewing patient records, verifying registration status of personnel and facilities, assessing compliance with medical protocols, and determining whether negligence contributed to the incident.

Mohammed noted that an independent investigative panel could be constituted depending on whether the family chooses to pursue the matter further, adding that the NSA would await more information before making further comments.
