The family of Assistant Superintendent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Harisu Aminu Sahabi, who was allegedly murdered in the line of duty on January 17, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria to urgently intervene and ensure justice is served without bias or delay.

Speaking during a press conference in Sokoto on behalf of the grieving family at the weekend, the elder brother of the deceased, Alhaji Lamir Amin, expressed deep anguish, and growing concern over the disturbing reports that the prime suspect in the murder case, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, has been granted bail despite the gravity of the offence and the overwhelming evidence of his culpability.

“We are devastated not only by the tragic and senseless murder of our brother, Aminu, who was serving his nation with honor, but also by the apparent miscarriage of justice that is unfolding before our eyes.

“How can a suspect who shot and killed a federal law enforcement officer in cold blood, during an authorized operation be released on bail so casually?”, Alhaji Lamir asked.

The family strongly suspects foul play and is alleging possible conspiracy or undue influence, particularly because the suspect is an indigene of Anambra State where the incident occurred.

“This is not just a crime against our brother and our family, this is a crime against the entire nation and against the rule of law.

” If those who kill law enforcement agents can walk free, what message are we sending to criminals and to the families of those who risk their lives to protect Nigeria?” Lamir stated.

The family however, demanded immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the granting of bail to the prime suspect, including a review of the legal rationale and any possible breach of procedure or abuse of judicial discretion.

The also demanded for the transfer of the case to a neutral jurisdiction to ensure transparency, impartiality, and protection against local bias or interference.

“We want the prosecution of the suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, to the fullest extent of the law, as a deterrent to those who may consider violence against state agents.

“We are also asking for Support for the family of the fallen officer, including appropriate compensation, a posthumous honor for his service, and assurance of safety for his dependents.

“The loss of Aminu has left a permanent scar on our family, but what is more painful is seeing the system he served with dedication fail to protect his memory.

“We are asking for justice, not sympathy. We are asking that the law — which he gave his life to uphold  must not be mocked by letting a suspected murderer walk free,” he said

The family urged President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Human Rights Commission, and the civil society community to take up this case as a matter of national urgency and security.
