The Minister of Works, David Umahi, walked out on journalists who were gathered to cover the activities of the works ministry in Abuja on Tuesday. The abrupt departure left the invited reporters, who had been waiting for over 50 minutes, stunned and confused.

The press conference, for which invitations were sent out just two hours prior to the event, was expected to provide updates on the ministry’s ongoing projects and initiatives. However, the minister’s sudden exit left the media representatives questioning the purpose of the gathering.

According to eyewitnesses, Umahi arrived at the ministry’s conference room at 2:50 pm. After reciting the national anthem and pledge, he quickly ended the meeting, declaring, “There is no press here. The press conference is not held again. When the press is ready.”

The minister then instructed the permanent secretary and other directors to follow him to his office, stating, “The press is not existent.” This unexpected proclamation caught the journalists off guard, as they had responded to the ministry’s invitation in good faith.

Among the media outlets present at the event were reporters from The Nation, The Guardian, Vanguard, Blueprint, Arise TV, Channels TV, and NTA, among others. These journalists, who represent some of the most respected and influential media houses in the country, were left with unanswered questions and no clear understanding of the minister’s actions.

Umahi, along with the accompanying directors, left the conference hall and proceeded to his office without providing any further explanations or offering an apology to the gathered press. The incident has raised concerns about the relationship between the ministry and the media, as well as the transparency and accountability of government officials.
