Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has paid glowing tribute to the late Honourable Justice Muhammad Lawal Uwais, describing him as a jurist who served Nigeria with “a touch of distinction” and unwavering commitment to justice and integrity.

In a statement on Friday, Adegboruwa lauded the late Uwais for his meritorious legal career, which spanned decades and culminated in his appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) from 1995 to 2006. He highlighted Uwais’ progression from being called to the Bar by the Middle Temple, London, in 1963, to becoming one of the most respected and longest-serving justices in the history of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.

“My Lord rose from his humble background in Zaria to join the highest court of the land with an unblemished record of diligence in service,” Adegboruwa said. “He leveraged his exalted office to preach unity, deliver justice, and promote integrity on the Bench.”

He further noted Uwais’ extensive contributions to the legal and judicial landscape, including his roles as Chairman of the Nigerian Body of Benchers, the National Judicial Institute, and multiple national and international commissions. Notably, Adegboruwa emphasized Uwais’ leadership of the Nigerian Electoral Reform Committee between 2007 and 2008, which produced what is widely regarded as a landmark blueprint for overhauling Nigeria’s electoral system.

“The defining moment of My Lord’s impact was the submission of the Electoral Reform Report. It contained fundamental recommendations aimed at sanitizing our political space,” Adegboruwa said.

He therefore called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour the legacy of Justice Uwais by revisiting and implementing the far-reaching reforms contained in the Uwais Panel Report.

“The best tribute to this great jurist is to breathe life into the reforms he envisioned. The time to act is now,” Adegboruwa concluded.
