Senator Ipalibo Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Banigo said her decision is aimed at aligning politically with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and supporting efforts to advance development in the state, as well as the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Her letter of defection was read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, Banigo explained that her move followed consultations with constituents, political associates, and key stakeholders across her senatorial district, noting that internal divisions, leadership disputes, and ongoing litigations within the PDP had adversely affected party cohesion.

She added that her decision is also motivated by a desire to join her political mentors, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Fubara, in supporting President Tinubu’s re-election bids and his ongoing economic reforms. Banigo cited the administration’s achievements in improving the economic situation, strengthening currency stability, and driving infrastructural developments across Nigeria.

Banigo further pledged her support for First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, commending her role in advancing initiatives that positively impact the lives of Nigerians.

After reading the letter, Senate President Akpabio welcomed Banigo to the APC, stating that “a seat is already prepared” for her and others expected to join the ruling party.

The defection is part of a broader trend of cross-party shifts as politicians position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Recently, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and his deputy, Mani Mummuni, also joined the APC, citing internal crises and legal disputes within the PDP.
