Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the demolition of a two-storey building on 310 Close, Banana Island, Ikoyi. He also sealed some others for contravening the law.

Sanwo-Olu gave the demolition order yesterday when he visited site of the collapsed seven-storey building and some other construction sites on the Island. He blamed the disaster on the ‘reckless operations of some developers hiding under the cover of Federal Government agencies issuing building approvals for unsuspecting property owners’. Sanwo-Olu described the situation as ‘irresponsible and unacceptable’.

The governor was joined by Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso, General Manager, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) Gbolahan Oki, among others.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We have given an order to stop work, not only at this site, but also in all of the construction sites in Banana Island.

This site is an unapproved extension into the water as the original line for Banana Island has been extended without approval. Where we stand now is not the original line, it’s way before this place.

“There are several extensions that have been granted by both the Federal Ministry of Work and Housing and National Inland Waterways (NIWA), the two federal agencies that are culpable for those extensions. They have done these extensions without our knowledge though we have the responsibility for building approvals.

“From what I have been told, all four buildings at the back have not applied for approvals. The legality is real and so that is why we are going around other properties in Banana Island.

“We will set up a seven-man committee to ascertain what has gone wrong and report back in two weeks. Whoever is found culpable will face sanctions. This will further strengthen our hand to be able to come up with a robust work plan that we can enforce going forward.”
