United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has said the US is actively working with the Nigerian government and security forces on counterterrorism operations.

Rubio stated this on Wednesday in Washington, DC, while appearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee during a hearing on the State Department’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget request.

The US Secretary of State said there was widespread concern about violence against Christians in Nigeria, adding that Washington was already involved in counterterrorism cooperation with Nigerian authorities.

“We are now actively in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces, including a joint operation a couple of weeks ago that took out the number two leader of global ISIS operating from inside of the country, and that continues,” Rubio said.

The ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, was killed on May 15 during a joint US-Nigerian operation targeting his compound in the Lake Chad Basin.

US Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, had said Al-Minuki was “most responsible for killing Christians” in Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the killing of Al-Minuki, saying several lieutenants of the ISIS second-in-command were also neutralised during the operation.

Tinubu said he looked forward to more successful strikes against terrorist elements.

Since then, further joint operations have been reported against terrorists in Nigeria.

Days after Al-Minuki’s killing, the Defence Headquarters said more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters were killed in multiple US-Nigerian airstrikes in Metele, Borno State.

On June 1, the Nigerian military, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, reportedly killed 21 ISWAP fighters in an airstrike in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Rubio’s remarks indicate that counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States is ongoing, particularly against ISIS-linked groups operating in the Lake Chad region.
