Despite nationwide outrage over a proposed pay increase for the political class, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commenced a retreat in Kano to review remuneration packages for political, public, and judicial office holders across Nigeria.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Remuneration and Monetisation Committee of RMAFC, Mohammed Kabeer Usman, who also serves as the Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, emphasized the importance of the exercise for the stability and growth of Nigeria’s governance framework.
Usman reminded participants that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the commission to determine appropriate remuneration for political, public, and judicial office holders at all levels. He noted that the commission had previously initiated a review of the remuneration packages to align with prevailing economic realities.
According to him, the commission carefully considered diverse perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings, and ministerial submissions, while also benchmarking against economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries.
He added that the review process focused not only on figures but also on sustainability and affordability.
“The commission has analysed the government’s capacity to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic, and sustainable,” he stated.
Usman further disclosed that the committee was directed to harmonize the earlier report and subsequent addendum into a single document, providing a clear and comprehensive framework for implementation.
He urged members to leverage their experience and expertise to ensure the retreat produces balanced outcomes beneficial to all stakeholders.
“I implore everyone to contribute towards achieving the purpose of our gathering, given our varied knowledge and wealth of experience,” he said.
The retreat is expected to establish a sustainable framework for political, public, and judicial office holders’ remuneration in line with the commission’s mandate.
Present at the retreat were Honourables Adamu Fanda (Kano State), Henry Nduka Awuregu, Aruviere Egharhevwa (Delta State), Hassan Usman Mahmud (Kaduna State), and Hauwa Umar Aliyu (Jigawa State).
Also attending were Professor Steve Davies Ugbah (Benue State), Honourables Abdulazeez Idris King (Kogi State), Aliyu Abdulkadir (Nasarawa State), and Nathaniel Adojutelegan (Ondo State). The committee secretary, Dr. Tanimu Adamu Aliyu, Director of Fiscal Efficiency, along with other supporting staff, were also present.
