The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was reached on Thursday during the Assembly’s resumed plenary in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers adopted a resolution to temporarily halt the process.

Impeachment moves against the governor and his deputy were initiated at the Assembly’s first sitting of 2026 over allegations of gross misconduct. The accusations included the demolition of the state Assembly complex and claims of expenditure without legislative approval, among other issues raised by the lawmakers.

Thursday’s resolution effectively pauses further steps in the proceedings after weeks of heightened political tension in the state. Sources within the Assembly indicated that the intervention by the president played a key role in calming the situation and encouraging lawmakers to step back from the process for now.

The impeachment effort had encountered legal and political challenges since it was triggered in early January, with developments drawing national attention to the ongoing power struggle in the state.
