A digital rights organization, Personal Data Protection Awareness Initiative, has submitted a petition to the National Data Protection Commission over “deeply concerning” privacy violations committed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

In a letter dated February 9th, 2024, the group highlighted an incident publicized across news outlets where a JAMB Computer Based Test (CBT) centre staff misused candidates’ personal data to make unwanted romantic advances.

The organization noted that beyond this unethical breach and infringment of principle of purpose limitation , they uncovered further glaring data protection issues at JAMB. Most troublingly, JAMB does not have any privacy notice published – neither on its website nor its various data collection forms.

Citing legal provisions under the National Data Protection Act 2023, the petition urges the Commission to compel JAMB to implement a clear online privacy notice outlining its data handling practices. Ensure it puts technical and organisational measures in place to protect personal data . It also calls for staff training to prevent further abuse.

Demanding a response within 30 days, the rights group warned it would escalate its grievances and pursue legal options if JAMB fails to suitably address these privacy concerns.

Highlighting JAMB’s influential role in Nigeria’s education sector, the organization expressed hope for swift and decisive action from JAMB to rectify its data protection deficiencies and respect examination candidates’ privacy rights.
