Excessive rainfalls in Lagos on Tuesday led to the flooding of over 150 houses across several communities in the Alimosho Local Government Area.

Among the worst affected areas were Oke Ishagun, Isale Aboru, Ikola Community, Olubodun Majiyagbe – Ajayi, Makinde Street, Olokowo Street and Adeola Street. The bridge at Ajasa Command was also submerged in the floods.

Although no casualties were reported, many residents have been displaced from their homes. NEMA, Fire Service and Police officials were seen evacuating trapped people and providing aid.

According to NEMA’s South West Coordinator Ibrahim Farinloye, 23 houses were cleared in Oke Ishagun, 35 houses in Isale Aboru and 29 houses in Ikola Community. 15 houses in Olubodun Majiyagbe – Ajayi, 12 in Makinde Street, 16 in Olokowo Street and 21 houses in Adeola Street were impacted.

Farinloye stated this incident should serve as a strong signal for what could unfold when the 2024 rainy season commences. He encouraged adopting flood disaster risk reduction strategies across all areas of society.

NEMA DG Alhaji Mustapha Habib Ahmed appealed to Nigerians to start clearing and desilting drainages to avoid such situations. He also directed local authorities to take strict action against those blocking drainages and dumping refuse.

The Lagos State Government has decided to pull down drainage-obstructing structures in flood-prone areas after this year’s rainy season.
