The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the abduction of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State by suspected armed bandits, describing the incident as a direct attack on the judiciary, the administration of justice and the rule of law.

In a statement issued by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the NBA demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the judicial officer, warning that attacks on judges posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and public confidence in the justice system.
The association said the abduction was not merely an assault on Justice Bunza as an individual but an attack on an institution central to the protection of citizens’ rights and the enforcement of the law.
“The Nigerian Bar Association condemns the abduction of Honourable Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State by suspected armed bandits,” the statement read.
“This brazen attack on a serving judicial officer is not only an assault on the person of Justice Bunza but a direct attack on the Nigerian judiciary, the administration of justice and the rule of law.”
The NBA said judicial officers occupied a sacred position in Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities without fear, intimidation or threats to their lives and liberty.
It expressed concern over what it described as the increasing audacity of criminal elements targeting institutions and officials involved in the administration of justice.
According to the association, the development underscored the urgent need for stronger and more effective security measures across the country.
The NBA called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the National Security Adviser and all other relevant security agencies to deploy every available human and technological resource towards securing Justice Bunza’s immediate and safe release.
It also urged the Kebbi State Government to work closely with federal security agencies to ensure that no effort was spared in rescuing the judge unharmed.
The association further demanded that those responsible for the abduction be identified, arrested and brought to justice.
“We call on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the National Security Adviser and all other relevant security agencies to deploy every available human and technological resource towards securing the immediate and safe release of Honourable Justice Bunza,” the NBA stated.
“We further urge the Government of Kebbi State to work closely with federal security agencies to ensure that no effort is spared in rescuing the learned judge unharmed and bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.”
The NBA also called for improved security arrangements for judges and other judicial officers across Nigeria, warning that members of the Bench should not be left vulnerable to criminal attacks while carrying out their constitutional responsibility of dispensing justice.
It stressed that protecting judicial officers was essential to preserving the independence, integrity and effectiveness of the judiciary.
“Judges should not be left vulnerable to criminal attacks while carrying out the solemn constitutional duty of dispensing justice. Protecting members of the Bench is indispensable to preserving the independence, integrity and effectiveness of the judiciary,” the association added.
The NBA expressed solidarity with Justice Bunza’s family, his colleagues on the Bench and the entire Kebbi State judiciary, while offering prayers for his safe and immediate release.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Honourable Justice Bunza, his family, his colleagues on the Bench and the entire Kebbi State judiciary during this deeply distressing period. We pray for his immediate release,” Osigwe stated.
