The House of Representatives Thursday queried the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) over alleged non-collection of stamp duties from 2004 to 2015.

The Hon. Whole One-led Public Accounts Committee ( PAC) of the House issued the query at its investigative session with the Postmaster General of the Federation, Mr. Bisi Adebuyi.

While being interrogated by the committee, the Postmaster General disclosed that NIPOST collected a total of N43, 364, 020.000 as stamp duties from February 2016 to November 9, 2019.

“I am hereby announcing to the world that what we have collected some far from stamp duties is forty-three billion three sixty-four million and twenty million from February 2016 to November 8 2019; domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),” Adebuyi declared.

But the chairman of PAC, Hon. Wole Oke expressed surprise that there was no record on stamp duties collection between 2004 to 2015.

“What happened to collection from 2004 to 2015. Are you saying that you don’t have the record or no collection made by any agency on behalf of the government?” he queried.

The lawmaker added that NIPOST is empowered by the law to collect stamp duties, therefore their claim that there were no collections between 2004 to 2015 was unacceptable to the parliament.
