*As bandits displaced 30 villages in Sokoto

Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday expressed grave concerns over migration of bandits into Sokoto, Kogi and Abia States.
The lawmakers expressed the concerns during the debate on the motion on the ‘Urgent need for provision of food and relief materials to victims of insurgency in Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency of Sokoto State’, sponsored by Hon Mohammed Sa’idu Bargaja.
In a related development, Chairman, House Committee on Customs, Hon. Leke Abejide who solicited for the House intervention, decried the influx of bandits who killed a secondary school student in his federal constituency.
“My amendment is to include the three Local Governments that I am representing. The bandits also that were flushed out of Niger State have moved to Kogi State.
“Just this week, a white man was kidnapped at the headquarters of my constituency between Mopa-Moro Local Government and Yagba East Local Government, before Isanlu. So I want to add that my own constituency should be included in this motion,” he urged.
On her part, Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Nkiruika Onyejeocha (APC-Abia) who confirmed the influx of bandits into Abia State, also frowned at the activities of bandits across the state.
In his lead debate, Hon Bargaja observed that the victims of banditry attacks in over 30 villages across Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency of Sokoto State were displaced to various locations within the neighbouring towns and states have started returning to their homes and villages given a fair improvement in security situation in the Area.
“The House also notes that at the moment as a result of improved security situation, inhabitants of Gazau, Tozai, Modachi, Tsullawa, Kalage, Lugu, Dan-zanke, Modachi, Bargaja, Satiru, and Shalla towns/villages in Isa Local Government as well as inhabitants of Gidan Buta, Kalage, Kyara, Garin Idi, Burkusuma, Tara, Ganji, Dakura, Rambadawa, Lajinge, and other Villages in Sabon-Birni Local Government, all in Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency have returned.
“The House is concerned that due to unavailability of food, shelter, farmland and business premises which were destroyed by insurgents, the returnees in Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency are living in abject poverty and suffering untold hardship which could continue if urgent intervention is not provided by the appropriate authorities,” he noted.
To this end, the House urged Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide food and other basic necessities to the people of Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency who had returned to their homes after being displaced.
The lawmakers also urged National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to provide necessary assistance to the victims.
While ruling, the Speaker mandated the Committees Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to ensure compliance.
