The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that repairs have commenced on damaged subsea cables responsible for disrupting telecommunications services in several West African countries, including Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, stated that multiple subsea cable cuts occurred in Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Portugal, negatively affecting countries like Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Cote d’Ivoire.

“A combination of cable cuts, resulting in equipment faults on the major undersea cables along the West African Coast, have negatively impacted data and fixed telecom services in several countries of West Africa,” the NCC stated.

The affected cables include the West African Cable System (WACS), African Coast to Europe (ACE), SAT3, and MainOne along the West Coast route from Europe. Cables like Seacom, Europe India Gateway (EIG), and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE1) providing traffic from Europe to East Africa were also impacted.

As a result, Muoka confirmed that internet access and speeds have experienced disruptions across the networks of service providers in the affected West African nations.

However, he added that services are gradually being restored as the cable companies have pledged to work around the clock to resolve the issues and restore full connectivity within the shortest possible time.

Earlier on Thursday, the MTN Group had acknowledged the impact of the damaged submarine cables on its services. The situation has also affected connectivity across many banks in Nigeria, according to Rasheed Bolarinwa, President of the Association of Corporate and Marketing Communications Professionals of Banks.

Telecom operators and regulators continue to monitor the situation as repair efforts progress to fully restore services disrupted by the subsea cable faults.
