I have read a piece by Mr. Hameed Ajibola where he proposed the establishment of the ‘Nigeria Special Judicial Police’- for the Federal Judiciary and the States Judiciary or in the most appropriate alternative, according to the writer, a ‘Federal Special Judicial Police’ or a State Special Judicial Police following the attack on courts.

The obvious remark that comes to the mind of the reader is “We are not even done with State’s police?!”

I do not agree with the perspective of the said writer, with due respect, based on the reasons stated below.

The creation of State Police may be enough because the State would be able to posts officers to protect it’s buildings while Federal Police will protect federal government buildings and properties.

The proliferation of the Police force is unnecessary, we all know Nigeria is vulnerable to institutional corruption. Hence, the creation of NSJP as suggested will breed new/additional ghost workers problems, budget padding problems amongst others…

Nonetheless, the creation of a body may be necessary to assist in investigating judicial corruption which I recommend should be a department of the State/Federal Police.

We really need to understand in-depth the Nigerian society to foresee what works and what would not.
