The reinstated Chairman of Irewole Local Government in Osun State, Mr. Remi Abass, was reportedly killed on Monday during a violent clash between hoodlums allegedly working for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The incident occurred after Abass and other sacked council officials attempted to take over the council secretariat in Ikire, following a Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated them.

The political tension in Osun State escalated last week after the Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the APC, reinstating the sacked elected council chairmen and councillors. However, the state government, controlled by the PDP, insisted that the local government elections had been nullified by a Federal High Court in Osogbo, leading to conflicting claims over control of the council.

Early on Monday, Abass, alongside other officials, moved to reclaim the council secretariat in compliance with the Court of Appeal verdict. However, hoodlums allegedly loyal to the PDP stormed the secretariat to dislodge them. Witnesses reported an exchange of gunfire during the confrontation, resulting in Abass’s death and several others sustaining injuries.

A source revealed, “The thugs emerged from a building opposite the secretariat, armed with guns. They specifically targeted the council chairman, surrounded him, and prevented his escape before killing him.”

The violence spilled onto the highway, where hoodlums fired sporadically into the air, creating panic and forcing motorists to take alternative routes to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

The Commissioner for Protocol and Government Affairs in Osun State, Mr. Soji Ajeigbe, countered the narrative, claiming that two PDP members, Ege and Igara, were killed by APC thugs. He stated, “Apart from those killed, six others were injured while attempting to take over the secretariat. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue, and the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.”

When contacted, Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said she would investigate the matter and provide updates.
