The Nigerian Bar Association in Abia State has urged the state government to prioritise the rehabilitation of dilapidated courtrooms and other deteriorating judicial facilities in its 2027 budget, warning that poor infrastructure is already disrupting court proceedings in parts of the state.

The call was made on Thursday in Umuahia during a public engagement organised by the Abia State Government to gather citizens’ needs and priorities ahead of the preparation of the 2027 state budget.
Presenting the position of the NBA, Ikemefula Ijioma acknowledged some of the infrastructural interventions already undertaken by the state government in the judiciary but said significant deficiencies remained in several court facilities.
According to the NBA, the roofs of some courtrooms are in such poor condition that proceedings, including hearings in important cases, are sometimes suspended whenever it rains.
The association said rehabilitating the affected facilities would provide a more conducive environment for judges, lawyers, litigants, defendants and other court users, while also supporting the speedy and effective administration of justice in the state.
The NBA therefore urged the government to make improved judicial infrastructure a priority in the proposed 2027 budget.
Another lawyer, Nduri Chibuike Eruba, also called for increased government support for the judiciary, reinforcing concerns raised about the condition of facilities within the sector.
Other stakeholders at the citizens’ engagement forum presented demands covering transparency, security and community development.
Mrs Ihediwamma Gladys of the Grassroots Community Development Initiative called for civil society organisations to be allowed to monitor the implementation of the state’s annual budgets to promote accountability and transparency.
Traditional rulers also urged the government to strengthen security around newly constructed school buildings in communities to prevent vandalism and theft.
Responding to the various submissions, the Abia State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Kingsley Anosike, said the engagement was organised to enable the government collect the needs and priorities of residents before finalising the 2027 budget.
Anosike assured participants that concerns raised by the NBA, persons living with disabilities, civil society organisations, traditional rulers and other stakeholders would be considered, subject to the availability of resources.
