The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), Nigeria Branch, has announced the second session in its ongoing Specialist Arbitration Webinar Series, titled “Steering the Course: An Introduction to Maritime Arbitration.”

Scheduled for June 20, 2025, at 12 pm WAT, the one-hour session will be held virtually via Zoom and aims to equip members and the wider Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) community with essential knowledge and insights into maritime arbitration—a sector of increasing significance in Nigeria’s legal and commercial landscape.

In a notice signed by the Branch Secretary, Dr. Adeyemi Agbelusi, FCIArb, the CIArb Nigeria Branch emphasized the importance of maritime arbitration in resolving high-stakes disputes such as charterparty disagreements, cargo claims, demurrage issues, and ship collisions. The session will include a 45-minute expert-led presentation followed by a 15-minute interactive Q&A.

“Maritime disputes require fast, expert-led, and confidential resolution. As Nigeria’s maritime trade expands, it is critical that legal and ADR professionals understand the procedures, rules, and institutions involved in maritime arbitration,” the statement said.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • The nature and types of maritime disputes
  • Relevant contracts and arbitral rules (including LMAA and SCMA)
  • The roles of arbitrators, counsel, and maritime experts
  • Pathways for Nigerian and African practitioners in maritime arbitration

The event is expected to provide practical guidance and open up new professional avenues for practitioners seeking to build capacity in a specialized and globally relevant field.
