The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Wednesday sealed off Bond Chemicals Industries Limited in Oyo State following concerns over violations of the National Environmental Regulations.

The enforcement action, according to the agency, was prompted by a public complaint which was later substantiated through independent verification, revealing that the company was discharging untreated effluent into the environment.

Assistant Director (Press)Nwamaka Ejiofor in a statement said a compliance inspection conducted by officials from NESREA’s South West Zonal Office on February 18, 2026, showed that the facility lacked a functional Effluent Treatment Plant and was releasing untreated wastewater with offensive odour directly into the environment, in clear violation of regulatory standards.

The agency stated that after the initial inspection, the company was formally notified and directed to immediately address the environmental infractions by installing and operating an appropriate effluent treatment system, as well as obtaining the necessary permits.

However, a follow-up inspection revealed that the company failed to comply with the directives.

Consequently, NESREA, in line with its statutory mandate, shut down the facility to halt further environmental degradation and protect public health.

Director-General of NESREA, Innocent Barikor, reiterated that all industrial operators must strictly adhere to environmental regulations, including the installation and proper use of pollution control equipment.

He warned that the agency would intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts across the country and would not hesitate to sanction any erring facility.

NESREA added that the factory would remain closed until it fully complies with all regulatory requirements, noting that further investigations and compliance monitoring are ongoing.
