As anticipation and anxiety grip the political landscape, the Governorship Election Petition Tribunals are poised to deliver their judgments in various states following petitions against governors declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the March 18 poll.

Across the country, several governors have found themselves in court due to petitions filed by their opponents who allege electoral irregularities and seek to overturn the election results.

The tribunals have already received written submissions from both respondents and petitioners, and they have informed the litigants that a date for the judgment will be communicated to both parties.

In Plateau State, where Nentawe Yilwatda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is challenging the declaration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), there is heightened tension. This tension arises from the fact that the grounds for declaring former governor Simon Lalong as the winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election are similar to the allegations made by the APC and its gubernatorial candidate.

Other states experiencing apprehension include Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ogun, Katsina, Kano, Delta, Lagos, and Ebonyi.

While Nigerians eagerly await the verdicts of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunals, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals have been busy confirming or overturning the elections of lawmakers.

Notable Tribunal Rulings:

  1. Kalu Triumphs: The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Abia North upheld the victory of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, dismissing the petitions of PDP and LP candidates, Mao Ohuabunwa and Nnamdi Iro Orji, for lacking merit.
  2. LP’s Nwokocha Affirmed: Senator Darlington Nwokocha of the LP representing Abia Central had his victory upheld by the tribunal, which declared the PDP’s challenge as pre-election matters that should have been filed earlier.
  3. Delta Central Election Declared Inconclusive: The tribunal in Delta Central senatorial district ordered a re-run in 48 polling units across four of eight local government areas, setting aside the Certificate of Return issued to Senator Ede Dafinone of APC.
  4. LP Rep Sacked in Enugu: The tribunal in Enugu sacked LP’s Sunday Umeha, declaring Dr. Festus Uzor of PDP as the winner due to Umeha’s improper resignation from the PDP before seeking the LP’s ticket.
  5. Eti Osa Election Declared Inconclusive: The tribunal in Lagos cancelled the election that declared Thaddeus Attah of the LP as the Representative of the Eti Osa Federal Constituency and mandated INEC to hold a second election in 32 Eti-Osa voting units within 90 days.

Concerns Raised by the Labour Party (LP):

The LP expressed alarm over the decisions of various tribunals that have led to the removal of its elected lawmakers. They argued that these rulings contravene established jurisprudence and undermine the internal affairs of political parties.

In response, they called upon the Nigeria Judicial Council to review the activities of legal officers who may have been compromised and found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
