The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has said that government policies and reforms must be measured by their real impact on businesses, investors and the wider society.

Osigwe spoke at the opening dinner of the 20th Annual Business Law Conference of the NBA Section on Business Law, NBA-SBL.

The conference was held under the theme: “Beyond Reforms: Measuring Policy Impact.”

In his remarks, the NBA President commended the NBA-SBL for its remarkable contributions to business law practice, policy advocacy and economic reform in Nigeria over the past two decades.

He noted that the Section has consistently shown how members of the legal profession can constructively engage with government, regulators, policymakers and other critical stakeholders in advancing reforms that strengthen Nigeria’s business environment.

According to him, the NBA-SBL has, through thought leadership, sustained policy engagement and institutional advocacy, positioned the legal profession as a credible and influential voice in shaping Nigeria’s economic and commercial landscape.

Osigwe said the Section’s work has helped to promote reforms aimed at making Nigeria more attractive to investors and improving the country’s overall competitiveness as an investment destination.

Speaking on the conference theme, the NBA President described it as timely, relevant and thought-provoking.

He said that while governments regularly introduce reforms and policies, it is equally important to assess whether such policies are properly implemented and whether they produce the intended results.

According to him, reforms must not end with announcements, documents or policy statements, but must be examined in terms of effectiveness, practical outcomes and measurable benefits.

He said the conference provides an important platform for stakeholders to evaluate existing policies, identify gaps in implementation and propose practical solutions that can help ensure that reforms deliver meaningful value.

Osigwe stressed that policies must ultimately work for the people by improving the business climate, encouraging investment, supporting enterprise, strengthening regulatory certainty and promoting economic development.

He welcomed participants from across Nigeria and abroad, expressing confidence that the deliberations at the conference would be productive and impactful.

The NBA President also expressed optimism that the discussions would generate actionable recommendations capable of strengthening Nigeria’s business and regulatory landscape.

He wished all delegates a fruitful conference and commended the NBA-SBL leadership for sustaining the platform for 20 years as a major forum for dialogue between the legal profession, the business community and policymakers.
