The learned silk in a statement described the hasty dismissal of the policemen as an act that directly discourages hardworking policemen, adding that the hammer was heavily used on them. ”This week or last week the house of an elder statesman, Chief E.K Clark was searched by some policemen on information they said they got. ”It was reported that these policemen obtained search warrant which was issued and shown to Chief Clark before the house was searched. Thankfully, nothing incriminating was found. The police authorities reacted was said to have apologised to Chief Clark. They did not stop at that, they have gone ahead to discipline some of these police men while the other is being proceeded against. I condemn in no mistaking terms the harassment of any Nigerian by unlawful and illegal search, arrest or detention. I equally condenm the harassment of the elder statesman, Chief E.K Clark. ”In other civilized climes, Chief Clark and those of his class ought to and should enjoy the maximum protection from the state. But I get worried by the punishment metted to the policemen,” he said. According to him, the report has it that they got information of an alleged crime, after which they obtained search warrant which they executed. Restating a comment from a learned colleague, the learned silk stressed that the Inspector General of Police was simply overreacting. Below is the quote cited: “I condemn the harassment of citizens by the police. I condemn it in its entirety. In this case we understand that there was a search warrant. Clark was shown the warrant and he authorized the police to search his house. That was a legal process and the law allows the police to do that. Incidentally, nothing incriminating was found. The police apologized to Clark and even sent a delegation to his house. Dismissing these policemen after the above, has a way of killing the morale of hardworking policemen. I think the hammer has been used so heavily on them”. Commenting on the reaction, Mr. Okutepa stated that he completely agrees that the hammer has been over used against these policemen, adding that, they were simply used as scapegoats. He also said that the right thing to do is to go after the person who gave the wrong information. He further urged the authorities to recall the policemen to their duty posts. ”They don’t deserve the kind of harsh punishments metted on them. The duty imposed on the police under S.4 of the police Act entitle them to act. ”The police owe a duty to reverse these punishments and recall them to duty. As Chief E.K Clark himself puts it, these policemen are being used as scapegoats. That shouldn’t be. All right thinking members of the society must prevail on the police authorities to revisit these punishments and recall them to their duty posts. ”The right things to do is to charge the person who gave the false information to court; that, the police is already doing: that should be pursued to logical conclusion to serve as deterrent to others who may want to do so in future, but not to punish the policemen. The police too must step up its game in intelligent gathering of information to be sure of crimes before applying for and executing search warrant. This is my take on this issue,” he said.]]>
