Nigerian police have opened an investigation into a viral video depicting persons identifying as LGBTQ members.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi condemned the video, describing participants as “criminals” whose actions violate Nigerian law.

The 50-second video shows four males and three females participating in an online LGBTQ challenge, confessing sexual orientations like lesbian, bisexual and transgender. Adejobi reacted on Twitter, stating “we are on this clip to take necessary action.” Homosexual relationships carry 14-year jail terms under Nigeria’s 2014 anti-gay law.

Reactions were mixed, with some Nigerians arguing the video broke no law while others insisted it encouraged illegal lifestyles.

But Adejobi asserted the police duty to uphold provisions criminalizing “unnatural offences.” The force crackdown ties into past arrests of alleged gay suspects despite dismissal of some cases over lack of diligent prosecution.

The police vow to punish those involved in the LGBTQ clip will hearten religious conservatives demanding tougher action against non-heteronormative orientations. But it risks allegations of undue discrimination from human rights advocates urging reform of sexual orientation laws. The investigation outcome may influence perceptions of security agencies’ role in regulating private sexual preferences.
