Operatives of Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service, have arrested George Idumangi, the prime suspect in the murder of a Bayelsa-based estate agent, Richard Ekpebu.

Idumangi, who was apprehended on Monday in Lagos while attempting to collect his processed international passport, allegedly offered a bribe of ₦4 million to immigration officers to avoid being handed over to the police. He reportedly made further attempts to compromise the process by offering ₦2 million to delete a file from his mobile phone and ₦3 million to have the device destroyed, but the officers rejected all offers.

His arrest followed inter-agency collaboration between the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Area E Police Command in Lagos, and Operation Puff Adder. The suspect’s mobile phone and newly procured passport are now in police custody. He is expected to be flown to Yenagoa for further investigation.

It was also learned that when operatives of Operation Puff Adder, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, arrived in Lagos to take custody of Idumangi, he repeated the bribe offer, which was again rejected.

Other suspects linked to the crime include Victor Shadrack (alias Doggy), one Insurance, and Miss Victory Benard Henry, who allegedly received ₦1 million for her role in the killing.

Confirming the development, Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson, SP Musa Mohammed, said, “Yes, he offered them the bribe.”

Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, led by Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, has expressed shock over the alleged involvement of some of its members in the killing of the 42-year-old agent.

Lokpobiri said the IYC remained committed to peace, justice, and development, stressing that criminal elements infiltrating the group do not define its values.

He said:
“We stand firmly against crimes and criminalities, and our founding philosophy has always been rooted in promoting peace, justice, unity, and development. Nobody has the right to take the life of another, and the IYC will support the police to ensure justice is served. The deceased was a promising Ijaw youth engaged in legitimate business, and we share in the grief of his family and friends.”
