The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three alleged accomplices in a disturbing case of ritual murder and kidnapping involving a popular native doctor, High Chief Levi Onyeka Obu, popularly known as “Ezeani” and “E-Dey-Play-E-Dey-Show.”

The prime suspect remains at large, while police operatives successfully rescued a 13-year-old girl believed to be moments away from being murdered for ritual purposes.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, 28 May 2025, and signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police revealed that the rescue operation was carried out in the early hours of 27 May at Umuojor village in Ishiagu community, Ezeagu Local Government Area.

According to the statement, the operation was executed by police officers attached to the Umumba Division, in collaboration with Neighbourhood Watch personnel and vigilant residents.

Three male suspects arrested in connection with the crime include:

  • Uche Kingsley Agumba (33)
  • Ilo Nweze Onyedikachi (36)
  • Ejike Odinwankpa (38)

Police further disclosed the shocking discovery of two decomposing bodies—one male and one female—buried in a concrete-sealed pit within an uncompleted building used as a shrine by the fleeing native doctor. The structure is owned by the prime suspect and has since been demolished by the Enugu State Government.

Initial investigations suggest the deceased victims were murdered and buried for ritual purposes. “The rescued child was moments away from suffering the same fate before the timely intervention,” the statement added.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who visited the crime scene personally, lauded the swift and courageous efforts of the security operatives and community members. He has ordered an intensified manhunt for the fleeing suspect and any remaining accomplices.

Meanwhile, disturbing video clips have surfaced online, capturing the gory scenes uncovered at Ezeani’s compound. The videos show upright bodies exhumed from soakaway pits, including that of a heavily pregnant woman reportedly buried alive. This discovery has fueled suspicions that the victims were buried alive as part of ritual practices.

One of the arrested suspects, alleged to have worked as a security guard at the compound, confessed to frequenting the premises for ritual activities but denied direct involvement in the killings. He was reportedly stripped and beaten by angry residents before being handed over to the police.

The suspect, Ezeani, had gained fame in Enugu for his flamboyant lifestyle and public persona as a cultural revivalist. He was said to have received several community awards before these gruesome revelations surfaced. Irate community members have since razed his properties, including houses and cars.

The Enugu State Police Command has urged members of the public with relevant information on the whereabouts of the fugitive to come forward, assuring them of utmost confidentiality and a firm commitment to justice.
