I was recently in Plateau State, and enjoyed the hospitality and warmth of the people of the State, especially my learned friends and colleagues. It is therefore quite devastating to me that such a peaceful State is turned into a slaughter slab by rampaging bandits who massacred innocent men women and children and burnt down their property. This bloodletting by the armed bandits masquerading as herdsmen is totally unacceptable and the Governments at all levels must do everything possible to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book. It is unfortunate that our dear country is gradually sliding into the Hobbesian state where there are no constituted authorities, no civilization, no laws and no common restraint; a state where life is nasty, brutish and short. The killing of innocent citizens in whatever guise is totally unacceptable. Human life is sacred and must be protected at all cost. Ours is a country with a government, governed by law. Government at all levels owe the people a constitutional duty to protect their lives and property, irrespective of their ethnic composition, creed, religious or political affiliations. The Nigerian government must act decisively with political will to end this carnage; and put an end to the vicious cycle of attacks and reprisals. A situation where innocent travellers are stopped, profiled or singled out for attacks is most worrisome, to say the least.
