Amid rising tensions in some parts of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau, the state government has warned residents against taking the law into their hands or engaging in any form of reprisals.

The government urged residents to cooperate fully with security agencies to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

This is coming after a wave violence in Jong, Jol, and Dorowa Babuje communities of Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of the state, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen people.

The development has raised security tensions in Jos, prompting the deployment of security personnel to maintain law and order.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Arc. Samuel Jatau, the government condemned in strong terms the barbaric attacks on Dorowa Babuje and Nding communities on February 19, 22, and 23, which claimed innocent lives and triggered widespread unrest.

The government also condemned a security incident in the early hours of Tuesday around the Terminus–Gadan Bako axis in Jos, which further fueled community tension in Jos North local government council of the state, urging security to intensify security operations in the affected areas and ensure those responsible are apprehended and brought to book.

Jatau said, “The Government strongly condemns this barbaric and senseless acts. These unfortunate incidents are coming at a time when sustained investments in dialogue, reconciliation, and community engagement have significantly improved the relative peace currently being enjoyed across the state.

“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemns these attack in their entirety and expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

“The Governor has directed security agencies to immediately intensify operations in the affected areas, strengthen security presence in surrounding communities, and ensure that those responsible for these cowardly acts are apprehended and brought to justice.

“Community and youth leaders and residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while cooperating fully with security agencies by providing credible information that may assist ongoing investigations. No one should take laws into their hands but allow security agencies to do their jobs.”

Jatau said the Plateau government had taken proactive measures to strengthen security to avert further breaches of law and order, calling on all residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
