Senate Minority Leader and lawmaker representing Benue South Senatorial District, Abba Moro, has said that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could secure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket in 2027 if he returns to the party.
Moro made the remark on Tuesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, where he also hinted at ongoing talks involving former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“But you know, in politics, nothing is certain. I’ve always said that in politics, two plus two is not four. These are matters of interest, and when it comes to existential interest from a community of persons within a geopolitical zone, it is possible,” Moro said when asked about the possibility of Obi’s return.
The lawmaker disclosed that although the PDP leadership has not formally reached out to Obi, some individuals within the party are already engaging him. “In the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate’,” he said.
On speculations about Jonathan’s possible comeback, Moro said conversations were ongoing but admitted concerns exist regarding constitutional provisions. “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run, and it’s a possibility. But [there are] those who fear constitutionalism, based on how many times he has been sworn into office, and those who are warning it might be dangerous, but there’s nothing dangerous there,” he explained.
He recalled that when Jonathan sought reelection in 2015, similar concerns were raised but later settled in court, affirming his eligibility to contest.
Moro’s comments come amid increasing political realignments and speculations within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
