The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong, warned that public trust in Nigeria’s judiciary is eroding, driven by politicisation and the absence of consequences for public officials.

Ememobong spoke in response to remarks by the Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications and Orientation, Sunday Dare, who had argued that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not intimidated by audits of its 11 years in government and that the country’s challenges predate the current administration.

While Dare had highlighted that reforms “take time to mature” and pointed to progress in democratic institutions despite lingering problems, Ememobong said economic statistics alone could not capture the daily realities Nigerians face.

Addressing Dare directly, he said, “When you speak about GDP, please tie it to the fact that you meet everyday Nigerians and when you interact with them, do they reflect the economy that you speak about? People no longer trust the judiciary.

There is the politicisation of the judiciary and the judicialisation of politics. There is absence of consequences. These are the realities that affect democratic consolidation.”
