*As Osun Election Won’t Be Inconclusive This Time, INEC Assures

Senator Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Osun Governorship election, has secured the highest number of votes in the exercise.

The result announced at the INEC Collation Centre in Osogbo showed that the PDP candidate who is the uncle of Music Star, Davido won in 17 Local Government Areas while, his closest rival, incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola, secured victory in 13 LGAs.

The electoral officials are putting finishing touches to the collation sheet.

Earlier, the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC) assured Nigerians that the election would not be declared inconclusive.

Supervising INEC National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, gave the assurance shortly after protesters stormed INEC office to demand that the exercise be concluded on first ballot.

The protesters did not gain access to the collation centre but they vowed to resists any rerun just like it happened in 2018 when the two leading candidates in this election went head to head.

Also Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the 2022 governorship election in Osun will not be declared inconclusive.

In 2018, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leading when the election was declared inconclusive.

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) subsequently won the rerun election.

On Sunday, protesters had stormed the INEC collation centre in Osogbo, the state capital, demanding that the exercise should end on first ballot.

Speaking ahead of the commencement of the final collation exercise, supervising INEC National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, said the election would end on first ballot.

He disclosed that the results of the 30 Local Government Areas had been uploaded to the INEC portal.

The election was generally peaceful with few recorded incidents of infractions.

Vote buying, as it was the case during last month’s governorship election in Ekiti State, was rampant.

Voters’ turnout was modest, according to reports from across the state.

There was tension as residents eagerly awaited the results from INEC at press time.

Both Oyetola and Adeleke said, after casting their votes yesterday, that they were sure of emerging victorious.

Oyetola said: “I worked very hard. I believe I should win the election.

“I believe I have worked very hard in the first three years and seven months. I have done very well in all areas. I don’t have to start to enumerate.

“People have actually reposed a lot of confidence in this administration. They want continuity.

“In any case, I do not take that for granted. I went to all the local government areas and one area office campaigning.”

Adeleke was similarly confident of winning.

His party later claimed victory in the election, citing “collated results from the polling units.”

The Caretaker Chairman of the party in the state, Dr Akindele Adekunle, said in a statement that the PDP had secured majority and more than two thirds spread across the 30 local governments and area office.

He said the ‘victory’ was a product of mass mobilisation and grand coalition of the people of the state.

Below are the LGAs won by the leading candidates in the election.
