The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has revealed that more than 13,543 terrorists and other criminal elements have been neutralised across Nigeria since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

Ribadu made the disclosure on Thursday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Policy and Development Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. The summit was organised to assess the performance of the Tinubu administration.

According to Ribadu, the military and intelligence services have made significant progress in counter-terrorism and internal security operations nationwide.

“Our troops have neutralised 13,543 terrorists. In addition, we have recovered and destroyed 252,596 rounds of assorted ammunition,” the NSA told an audience comprising top government functionaries, APC leaders, and stakeholders.

He also disclosed that at least 124,408 members of Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), along with their family members, have surrendered to Nigerian forces. These individuals are currently undergoing rehabilitation under the federal government’s de-radicalisation and reintegration programme.

Ribadu credited the progress in the security sector to increased inter-agency collaboration, better intelligence gathering, and the political will of the current administration.

Thursday’s announcement comes as Nigeria continues to battle multifaceted security threats, including the long-running Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnappings in the North-West and North-Central, and separatist violence in the South-East.

Since its onset in 2009, the insurgency in the North-East has claimed over 350,000 lives—both directly and indirectly—according to UN estimates, and displaced more than two million people. Despite claims of significant victories over insurgents, security agencies still contend with frequent attacks in Borno, Yobe, Plateau, and Benue states.

In recent months, there has been a noticeable resurgence in deadly violence across some parts of the country, raising concerns about the durability of security gains.
