The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has drawn attention to the increasing number of new entrants into the legal profession, noting that over 10,000 lawyers were called to the Nigerian Bar in the past year alone.

Osigwe made the remarks while delivering a goodwill message at the 2nd Annual Lecture of the Body of Benchers and the Public Presentation of the Report of the Directions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) held in Abuja.
In his remarks, the NBA President observed that while this milestone reflects the continued growth of the profession, it also raises important questions about the future of these young lawyers and the opportunities available to them.
According to him, many newly admitted lawyers remain uncertain about what the profession holds for them, making it imperative for institutions within the legal ecosystem to provide guidance, structure, and opportunities that will enable them to thrive.
He stated that the theme of the lecture, “Body of Benchers: Beyond the Call to Bar,” was both timely and thought-provoking, as it calls for deeper reflection on the evolving responsibilities of the Body of Benchers in shaping the future of the profession.
The NBA President emphasised that the work of the Body of Benchers does not end with the ceremonial call to the Bar; rather, it extends to ensuring that the legal profession remains vibrant, inclusive, and responsive to the realities faced by practitioners across the country.
Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, also underscored the importance of the continued partnership between the Nigerian Bar Association and the Body of Benchers in strengthening professional standards and institutional frameworks governing legal practice in Nigeria.
In this regard, he expressed appreciation for the constructive collaboration between the Body of Benchers, the NBA, and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation in the ongoing efforts to amend the Legal Practitioners Act, noting that such cooperation demonstrates a shared commitment to modernising the regulatory framework of the legal profession.
The NBA President further acknowledged the significance of the Directions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, describing them as an important instrument for strengthening professional discipline and guiding legal practitioners on the ethical standards expected of members of the Bar.
He noted that maintaining integrity and accountability within the profession is critical to sustaining public confidence in the administration of justice.
He concluded by expressing optimism that the lecture would stimulate robust and forward-looking discussions that would further strengthen the role of the Body of Benchers in advancing the legal profession in Nigeria.
According to him, engagements of this nature provide an important platform for reflection, reform, and collaboration among key stakeholders within the justice sector.
