As X User Deletes Post, Apologises

OPay Digital Services Limited has denied a viral claim that it would shut down its operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026, threatening legal action against an X user who circulated the information and urged customers to withdraw their funds.

The fintech company described the publication as false and misleading and demanded that the user, identified as Cute Hafserh, with the handle #haifah_er_abba, delete the post, issue a clear retraction and tender an unreserved apology.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, OPay said it became aware of the publication made on August 30, in which the user allegedly told customers that the company would be proceeding on an indefinite break from September 1 and advised them to withdraw their money.

The company described the claim as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory,” alleging that the publication had caused reputational and commercial damage to its business.

OPay consequently gave the user until 11:59 p.m. on Monday to permanently delete the publication and stop further circulating the claim on X or any other social media platform.

“You are hereby required to permanently delete and desist from disseminating or further publicising the said publication from your X account or any other platform before 11:59 PM WAT today, issue a clear and unequivocal retraction of the said publication, and forthwith, tender an unreserved apology to us,” the company stated.

It warned that failure to comply could result in legal proceedings.

“Take notice that your action has caused irreparable damage to us and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” OPay added.

The company also issued a separate public warning through its official social media platforms, urging Nigerians to verify information before circulating it online.

“Not everything you see online is true. False narratives can cause real harm, and creating or spreading content that misleads people should not be taken lightly,” OPay said.

OPay assured its customers that its services and operations remained normal, stressing that it would communicate directly with customers whenever there was important information concerning its operations.

The company therefore dismissed any suggestion that customers needed to withdraw their funds because of an impending shutdown or indefinite break.

Following the legal warning, the X user subsequently deleted the original publication and apologised to the fintech company.

In a post on Monday, Hafserh acknowledged that the claim that OPay would go on an indefinite break from September 1 was false and misleading.

“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information. I have taken down my post. #OPay_NG operations are normal, and there is no break or shutdown,” the user wrote.

The user also apologised for the publication and any inconvenience it may have caused, explaining that the shutdown claim had already been circulating online for several days before it was reposted.
