Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, has lashed out at former President Donald Trump and several Republican lawmakers, saying their recent attacks prove that the United States is “being led by idiots.”
Her remarks came after Trump accused Omar of “telling us how to run our country” and called for her impeachment, following a failed Republican effort to censure her in Congress.
The controversy stems from Omar’s online activity in the aftermath of the September 10 assassination of conservative activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk. Omar retweeted a post that some critics interpreted as blaming Kirk for his own death. The move sparked outrage among Republicans and Kirk’s supporters.
In response, Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introduced a resolution to censure Omar for allegedly “smearing Charlie Kirk.” However, the measure narrowly failed on Wednesday, with lawmakers voting 214–213 against it.
Trump reacted furiously, taking to social media to denounce Omar. “Somalia is consistently ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries, including bribery, embezzlement, and a dysfunctional government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! … What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it,” he wrote.
Speaking on The Weekend Prime, Omar dismissed Trump’s remarks, describing him as someone “always unhinged, always derailed, always creating chaos.”
She mocked his call for her impeachment, pointing out that members of Congress cannot be impeached. “He’s supposed to be the president of the United States, heading off to Europe to represent us. When he does, he’s educated enough to understand that members of Congress can’t be impeached,” she said.
Omar accused Trump and his allies of exposing their ignorance. “Their comments expose themselves for how stupid they are, which is embarrassing for us as a country,” she stated.
She also pushed back against Republican threats to deport her. “When they’re saying they’re going to deport me knowing fully well that you cannot deport an American citizen, what that displays for not just Americans but folks on an international platform is that our country is being led by idiots, and that is not something that we would be comfortable with,” she said.
Expressing sadness over the attacks, Omar concluded: “I feel great sadness that these are the kinds of people representing us.”
