Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to ensure that only candidates who support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu succeed in the forthcoming FCT area councils’ elections scheduled for February 21.

Wike made the declaration on Saturday in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing the celebrant as a “credible ally, a trustworthy friend and good brother” who has remained dependable even in difficult times.

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on Feb. 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate that is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand.”

Wike further emphasized his personal commitment to Onor, stating, “I will continue to be with you and work with you, because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family.”

However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned Wike’s remarks, describing his declaration of “war” against anti-Tinubu candidates as reckless, inflammatory, and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi warned that such rhetoric could deepen political tensions and undermine the integrity of the electoral process. He stressed that it is the Nigerian people, not President Tinubu or any minister, who will determine the outcome of the February elections.

“We consider the Minister’s declaration of ‘war’ against so-called anti-Tinubu candidates not only irresponsible, but dangerous in the current fragile atmosphere of our nation. At a time when Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, insecurity, and deep political distrust, the last thing the country needs is inflammatory rhetoric from those entrusted with public office,” the ADC statement read.

The party accused Wike and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to intimidate voters, suggesting that such tactics reflect their fear and growing unpopularity. The ADC vowed to resist any effort to subvert the will of Nigerians through lawful and constitutional means.

“Attempts to threaten or coerce voters into political submission only advertise their fear. They betray Wike, Tinubu and the APC’s anxiety about popular support and reveal how deeply disconnected and unpopular this government has become in the eyes of many citizens,” the statement added.

The ADC urged the Minister, the APC, and the President to respect Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, stressing that “no declaration of ‘war’, no abuse of office, and no political theatrics can override the sovereign voice of the electorate. Our democracy was hard-earned. It will not be surrendered to intimidation by actors like Wike and his paymaster.”

The party further warned that any attempt, overt or covert, to undermine the free choice of Nigerians in the elections will be firmly resisted through mobilization of democratic institutions, civil society, and the Nigerian populace.
